Tumble Dryer Repairs

Common Faults & Troubleshooting

It’s not always easy keeping up with the washing, especially in cold, wet weather. Large families often create a whole lot of laundry and the absence of wind and sunshine means you are limited in your ability to dry your washing. A tumble dryer is both a convenience and a necessity. You can take your clean laundry right out of the washing machine and place it straight into the tumble dryer to be dried fast. Generally speaking, tumble dryers are well made appliance and, in most cases, they will last for many years. However, like all household appliances, they do encounter problems from time to time. Here are some common faults and troubleshooting tips for your tumble dryer.

Tumble Dryer Won’t Start

There are a number of reasons why your tumble dryer won’t start. As frustrating as this can be, there are only a few things you can do to possibly rectify the problem. Otherwise, call our engineers today.

What You Can Do

  • If your tumble dryer can’t close properly, it could be because lint has become trapped in the latch. Clean out the latch and make sure you can close the door.
  • If your latch requires you to push start your tumble dryer, check to ensure everything is properly aligned.
  • Check the power supply. Make sure your tumble dryer is plugged in and that you have correctly attempted to turn your dryer on. You should also check your circuit breaker in case the fuse has jumped.

Leave It For The Experts

  • If you’ve cleaned the latch, including the latching mechanism, and your tumble dryer still won’t start, the thermal fuse may have blown. If this is the case, you should leave it to the experts.
  • There could be a problem with your dryer’s fuse, power cable or other internal mechanisms. These should always be checked by the experts.

Clothes Take Too Long To Dry

The whole purpose of a tumble dryer is to dry your clothes. If you find your dryer is taking considerably longer to dry, there are a few things you can check.

What You Can Do

  • Clean the lint filter. Your dryer relies on continuous airflow to efficiently dry your clothes. If the lint filter has not been cleaned for a while, airflow is inhibited and it will take longer for your clothes to dry. As a rule of thumb, you should check your lint filter after each load of washing has been dried.

Leave It For The Experts

  • Another reason your tumble dryer is taking too long to dry your washing is that the heating element is no longer working. Turn your tumble dryer and see how hot, or not, the circulating air is. If the air does not heat, call us today and have one of our experts check and, if need be, replace the heating element.

Tumble Dryer Is Noisy

Tumble dryers are not exactly quiet, but they don’t make an excessive amount of noise. If your tumble dryer is suddenly too noisy you can take some steps to remedy this.

What You Can Do

  • Check the inside of the drum and make sure nothing has become trapped in the door or any part of the drum.
  • Your tumble dryer may not be properly balanced. Check the feet at each corner at the bottom of your dryer. You should be able to twist these feet left or right to adjust your tumble dryer so that it is level again.
  • Sometimes the noise is coming from metal objects in your tumble dryer. Things like jeans and coats often have metal buttons and the noise they make is inevitable. You can turn your jeans or coat inside out to limit the rattling.
  • Always check pockets. We all have a tendency to put things in our pockets. Always check your pockets and empty the contents before placing them in the dryer. You’d be amazed at some of the things our engineers have pried out of tumble dryers.

Leave It For The Experts

  • If you’ve taken care of not allowing stray objects into your tumble dryer and you’ve balanced the legs but your dryer is still noisy, you may have worn out the drum support rollers. Replacing these requires the dryer to be opened so it is best left for the experts.

Tumble Dryer Isn’t Tumbling

If your tumble dryer’s drum is not turning, but the motor is running, there isn’t much you can do.

What You Can Do

  • You may have put too many heavy items in the dryer. Remove them and try again.

Leave It For The Experts

  • If you’ve lightened the load in your tumble dryer and it still won’t tumble, the dryer’s belt may be worn or broken. Call us today and one of our engineers will be on site fast to replace the belt for you.

Clothes Are Covered In A Layer Of Lint

Lint on your clothes is never a pretty sight and if this is what you are facing when you take your clothes out of your tumble dryer, take a look at the lint filter.

What You Can Do

  • Remove all traces of lint from the filter and put your clothes through a short drying cycle. Even if your clothes are already dry, this process should remove the excess lint.

Leave It For The Experts

  • If you regularly check and clean your lint filter and your clothes are still covered in lint, airflow in your tumble dryer may not be functioning as it should. It may be time to call in an expert.

Clothes Come Out Of The Tumble Dryer Hopelessly Wrinkled

Overly wrinkled clothes are more of an irritation than a technical problem. Most of the time, you can avoid this quite easily.

What You Can Do

  • Don’t overload your tumble dryer. Jamming your laundry too tightly in will not allow for proper airflow. Not only will your clothes come out wrinkled, they’ll also take a lot longer to dry than they should.
  • Use fabric softener in the washing cycle. The softer your washing, the less likely they will wrinkle.
  • Remove your washing out of the tumble dryer as soon as possible after the drying cycle.

Leave It For The Experts

  • If your tumble dryer’s temperature unexplainably gets too hot, that means your clothes will too. Hot clothes wrinkle faster as they cool. This is usually caused by a malfunction with the temperature or thermostat and will need the skills of one of our engineers to repair.
